Star Trek: Section 31 Production Finally Begins, First Look at the Cast Revealed

“And we’re off to the races!” Executive Producer Alex Kurtzman said to announce the commencement of filming on Star Trek: Section 31.

Filming on the movie has begun in Toronto. It will continue the story of Phillipa Georgiou, former Emperor of the Terran Empire and the Mirror Universe counterpart of Michael Burnham’s mentor. Georgiou was last scene in the Star Trek: Discovery episode “Terra Firma, Part 2,” where the Guardian of Forever sent her back to an unknown point in time.

Michelle Yeoh, who has won an Academy Award®  for her role in Everything Everywhere All at Once since her last turn as Georgiou, is returning in the lead role. The filming announcement has brought with it the announcement of the rest of the cast. At this time, it is unknown who anyone will be portraying.

Omari Hardwick is best known for playing the lead role of James “Ghost” St. Patrick in the Starz series Power for six seasons. Power tells the story of a drug dealer who wants to leave the criminal world to pursue a legitimate business as a nightclub owner while also evading the police. Hardwick earned a NAMIC Vision Award in 2016 and NAACP Image Awards in 2018 and 2020 for his performance. He is also releasing his first foray into music, “Concrete & Whiskey,” shortly.

Kacey Rohl is best known for her performance in the NBC show Hannibal, based on the Thomas Harris novels about serial killer Hannibal Lecter. Rohl played Abigail Hobbs, the daughter of a serial killer, with whom both Hannibal and detective Will Graham take an interest. The character was a driving force of the story in the first season.

Sam Richardson was nominated in 2022 and 2023 for his guest appearances in Ted Lasso, winning in 2023. His character of Edwin Akufo, a tech billionaire with a love of football, served as an antagonist for Sam Obisanya. Richardson has previous experience in Star Trek, having voiced the Bolian Vendome, Ensign on the Cerritos, and Captain of the Inglewood in two episodes of Star Trek: Lower Decks.

Sven Ruygrok appeared along with Troye Sivan and John Cleese in the three Spud movies, based on novels by John van de Ruit. He played Robert “Rambo” Black, one of the “Crazy Eight,” eight boys who share a dorm at an elite boarding school.

Robert Kazinsky is recognizable for his role as Chuck Hansen in 2013’s Pacific Rim. Hansen piloted a Jaeger, a giant mech that fought against the monstrous Kaiju. He served as a rival to lead Raleigh Becket. Kazinsky has said the most fun he’s ever had was performing in Pacific Rim due to his love of Science Fiction, which bodes well for Star Trek.

With her role in Star Trek, Humberly Gonzalez will join the echelon of actors who have appeared in both Trek and Star Wars. This year, she will be voicing the main role of outlaw Kay Vess in Star Wars: Outlaws, a third-person game set between Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi

James Hiroyuki Liao previously appeared in Trek as a Bridge Officer on the USS Vengeance in Star Trek: Into Darkness. He is best known for his role as Roland Glenn in the fourth season of Fox’s Prison Break. Glenn is a hacker who works with protagonist Michael Scofield to take down the villainous Company.

Star Trek: Section 31 is written by Craig Sweeny and directed by Olatunde Osunsanmi, both of whom previously worked on Star Trek: Discovery. Its executive producers are Alex Kurtzman, Craig Sweeny, Aaron Baiers, Olatunde Osunsanmi, Frank Siracusa, John Weber, Rod Roddenberry, Trevor Roth, and Michelle Yeoh. It will be streaming on Paramount+ in 2025.
